Urban infrastructures, to fully take advantage of future investments, must first be recognized as interconnected complex systems systems. This forum paper describes research and education needs that, if properly addressed, could prepare the civil engineering profession meet new challenges urban infrastructure renovation. Among needs, objective documentation life-cycle performance constructed leverage novel sensing advances in computer science, tools often untapped by programs. Other opportunities involve design process, perhaps most important milestone development engineers. The topics discussed this becomecore curriculum areas newly developed postgraduate eventually undergraduate authors hypothesize integration such is successful, engineers become true protagonists rejuvenation US infrastructures stewards cities megacities.
